gained use of their back legs. After school, I relocated them from
the tent in front of my apartment to what is ostensibly a pillow fort
in my second bedroom. It turns out there are seven puppies, all
diagnosed as "pretty healthy" by the non-veterinary professionals at
our compound.

I think Cookie was pretty happy with the move. Dogs don't usually
give birth out in the open, but she did right outside my apartment.
This was probably her plan the whole time.

No idea what we are going to do with them once they're done nursing.
But that is a sad time we'll have to think about later. Now it's cute
time!

new residents in the old compound living in a makeshift tent outside
my apartment. The compound event we'd all been
expecting/dreading/waiting for came on a day so close to Christmas Day
that it will be referred to as Christmas Day in all future
recollections of this story. Our dog Cookie gave birth to six ugly
little puppies.

She seems to be a good mother so far. Apparently she wouldn't let
anyone near them for the first three or four days. After a while she
gave up and let the guys who stayed here over the break check on them.
She seemed eager to show them too me when she greeted me at the gate,
but got pretty nervous when Daniel and I picked them up last night.
When I opened the door this morning, she ran inside, jumped up on the
couch, and passed out until noon. I think she was ready for a break.

Update after jet lag.

This afternoon, our friend Ghazi took us out to see some falcons in action.  He introduced us to a couple of guys who catch, train, and sell falcons and we got to watch one in action.  First they showed us how they catch the falcons which is pretty interesting.  They basically make a noose backpack (see previous post) and attach it to a pigeon and when the falcon comes in for the kill, its talons get caught in one of the many small loops stuck to the pigeon's back.  It's a lot like fishing.

The guys showed us one of their recent catches and then demo'd one of their trained birds for us and some Saudis interested in purchasing one.  After the demo, the falcon sold for 18,000 riyals which is just under $5000.

Cookie isn't doing too well.  She's down to only one fully functioning leg.  She doesn't put any pressure on her back right leg, she can use it for balance but that's about it most of the time.  She basically just hobbles around using her back left leg and her front left leg as a crutch.  She doesn't seem to want to bend the front left one but can still put pressure on it.

She's still pretty good at hobbling around though.  Still chases and barks at the new guys but afterwards she can barely make it up one step.  No word from the vet.  If we have to put her down, it looks like we might have to do it ourselves.
